If you were elected Lord Mayor of London?

What changes, laws would you produce, considering that there is a lot wrong with the Capital. I only ask because i can see this beautiful city being taken over by property developers being given free pull back on to despoil much of what is beautiful, glass boxes going up in the City and elsewhere, that do nothing to enhance the areas, and those areas that need pressing funding, for new and better housing and more sport facilities for all.
This may sound trivial but one thing i would do is build or reopen proper toilets, for some unreasonable reason they are far and few between, and the ones that exist are in a poor state of repair, or worse still filthy. And i would dispose of those open French period loos that have been installed. I often wonder what visitors to the capital make of it, after all it's a basic necessity of life. And looking at we are hosting the 2012 Olympics then isn't it about time the powers that be took more pride in this city that over 7 million souls drudgery and live in.
Ok, Mayor of London, it's a hypothethical question at any rate, somethings you could change if given the power.

Well firstly I would bulldoze money into run down council estates, offer funding for sports projects thus keeping younger children off of the streets in a protected environment from a younger age, hopefully this would cut down on anti social behaviour and gang culture.I'm originally from London born and raised but no longer breathe there.I took my children to London a while back and although the facility's are good (educational such as museums and interesting places to visit)I'm intimidated I was embarrassed to say that the city has gone to rack and ruin.Far too much money is being spent on things that don't and won't get better the situation.I also fully agree about the toilet situation!

Who cares about the London 2012 Opening Ceremony, its all about the athletes who compete!?

As dream of as London provides good facilities from all the athletes its all that matters. As long as the athletes compete well and produce a good show its all good. We dont call a fancy pancy opening ceremony like China!
Its all about sport !

You cannot show anything like China. An purpose of SLAVE-TRADERS cannot be compared to a 5 thousand year old civilization.

Where is the best place to live in London?

I'm about to move to London and wondering which are the unsurpassed parts to live in. I know there are zones but this is related to how far are you from city center (correct?).
If you can give details of which parts are:
- safest, in terms of wrong rates and gang activity
- less expensive to rent in
- have access to transport, facilities, activities (culture, sports, music etc..)
An entire direction like SW is cheep to rent, WC has lots of activities, and SE is the safest, and mostly you can find everything in zones 2 and 3, would be great.
Thanks

The "LONDON" Olympics?

Noted that many of the grants towards the arts have been cut in order to divert extra funds to the LONDON Olympics.

Can someone please tell me, or preferably show me, what benefit will be had by any community skin London.

Please dont answer by saying that sports events will be spread around the UK, we all know that some of the very minor events(such as no - hoper football teams, with smallest attendance) may be played at outlying football grounds.
What I want to know is, what financial benefit will the LONDON Olympics have for the lay of the country, how will it benefit the average "Joe" on the dole que in say Newcastle Upon Tyne?

What financial or leisure benefits are their in the available and sports facilities which are costing us all a fortune, for anyone outside travelling distance of London?

Is it not time to return the games to Athens For all?
tinypony

my apologies, I did not realise tat we all had this craving to live in London.
As for the pleasure of watching the sport, well all I can say is that what you will be watching apparently is a bunch of steroid pumped athletes getting medals which they will resurfacing in the near future.
But hey, if that lights your candles then so be it!
Hi Richard

Yes wales was thrown a bone by the government to quell the screams for independance.
Sheffield already has an Olympic Leisure pool so why build another one.
The olympic village of which you speak, will be turned into expensive flats for outsiders when the games are finished and the developers will sidle away with a tidy profit at the expense of the British Tax payer

Give the Olympics a unchanging home in Greece with every participating country paying towards its upkeep, costs and security. Rent it out for other competitions or rent the financial assistance out to tourists and holidaymakers when it's not being used.

Then we wouldn't have these expensive campaigns every 4 years to see who could host the games, we wouldn't have to have billions paid out by numerous countries building pools, stadiums, accommodation and venues. And if it was used for tourism in non-Olympic years, it would also facilitate to pay for itself.

Now that fox hunting is banned, where would one find the British upper classes these days?

Where would one certainly spot an upper-class English person in today's society? eg. What department stores, which sporting facilities, what public events, which restaurants, which specific bars and night clubs, which artisitic venues, which social clubs, which motherland clubs, what schools, which churches, which universities, and in which specific towns and neighbourhoods around London and the Home Counties would an upper-merit Briton probably reside?

Trust me. I am not some seedy social climber. I am asking this question in order to garner information for an academic paper I will be writing, so I beg you to only respond with a serious answer. Save the smart-alec retorts for any of my other nonsensical questions.

Investigate out select polo games; they also go shooting with friends on their estates; Prince Charles has regular shooting parties at Balmoral, for eg.

The younger ones will be at the most exclusive clubs and they mostly still go to Oxford, or Cambridge, although a steady migration is making its way to St Andrews in Scotland since Prince William went there. They also demonstrate a tendency to populate the officer training schools for the armed forces.
