Whats Hackney London like for someone who has never been?
Im prevailing to hackney in july08 to visit my boyfriend family and i have never been before, im 19 and was wondering if any 1 can tell me what i can do there 4 a week if there's any good places to go or not to go THANKS.
Yeah Hackney is a bit unpolished, but it's not all bad. It has a lot of council estate tower blocks which aren't very nice but there are some better bits.
There's an square footage called Victoria Park which is quite nice - as the name suggests there is a huge park there - one of the Royal Parks (like Hyde put or Regent's Park). Which is nice if the weather is good - picnics, sunbathing, cricket, tennis, football etc. That tract isn't bad. There's also the Hackney Empire theatre and as the previous answer says it's pretty close to significant london for all the usual attractions.
Are many East London boroughs such as Hackney really that DANGEROUS to live in?
I'm impressive to London this year, and I have heard from some friends that Hackney and places nearby are quite dangerous to live in due to the high criminal cases. Is is in reality that bad?Of course I am planning to move there because I am not very well-off, so that the area I can afford.
People living there are very welcomed.

This area is undergoing some reconstruction and is becoming the new but "affordable" put where many young graduates working in London are looking to live.
You will be better off financially if you find a place to share - then you may be able to combustible in nicer accommodation. You will still probably have to pay around £600 a month at least.
As with many cities the violent crime that you hear about in any area of London is essentially gang related - and usually involves teenagers. Just find a building with good security and be sensible about where you go at shades of night, especially if you are alone. It's just common sense really - no one can tell you that any part of any big city is completely safe.

You should be gifted to share a house with other students and I would imagine you'd need at least £250 in rent a month. Food you can buy absolutely cheaply from supermarkets, there are lots of economy brands and they sell off stuff close to their sell by date. You scarcity to get an Oyster Card for your transport, it gives you half price travel on tubes and buses. It might be best to get a weekly or monthly out of date. Hackney is one of the cheaper areas as far as housing is concerned.
