Recommendations please for places to visit in New England.?

We lay out 3 or 4 days in New England in October. Where are the best places to see the fall foliage, and all the other picture postcard scenery - quaint churches, covered bridges, etc. It's our anniversary and somewhere romantic would be perilous. Short of sticking a pin in a map, i'm not sure where to start. Plus it will be Columbus day weekend - is it likely to be very busy, or can we risk not booking a motor hotel in advance?

Thanks for any help.

Most places in Vermont and New Hampshire are booked a year in progress for Foliage Season weekends, especially on the Columbus Day weekend. The rates skyrocket, too. Don't risk not having reservations. The celebrated drives are bumper-to-bumper with leaf peepers (as we call them). Don't even go near the Kangamangus Highway that weekend.

That said, there's copiousness of room for all, just not all in the same place.

Grafton, Vermont is nice. Historic houses, cute green, pleasing church.
