My question is, how can you speak to an
English speaking person who does not
live in the United States. I must have
usurped too much. Expressions, and
terminology that is unique to American
people don't always compute when a
British person hears it,
You cannot snub the difference in age and size between the US and the UK. England's English tradition is better
established, having been--well--having been England for
a whole lot longer than the US has been the US.
And England is altogether small, in comparison to the United States. People aren't as transient within its borders; and
when they do move, they don't move as far. There's not
as much linguistic baggage to drag around.
And even though England is a block and a half away from Europe, it is still the United States which has the teeming shores--shores teeming with refugees who offer with them their own languages, accents, cultures.
But it is not just linguistic. It is cultural.
There's something else that England has which the US does not. England has a class system. I'm not saying there isn't a sphere of rich and poor in the US. But England
has a long history of separation between upper, middle
and lower-class, which can not be transcended without
higher birth language standards.
Elegant language is the mark of the upper class; and while
upper class English might slum it sometimes and unreservedly
casually, they always know how to speak correctly when
it is necessary. But the lower classes---with inadequate
education--cannot even pretend to sport themselves
without language. So there is a not-so-subtle motivation
for the middle and lower class English to speak a better
class of English. Create of My Fair Lady.
However...in the US, we have a notorious disregard of
class. Sadly, in the US, class does not make class;
filthy rich makes class. So you can speak as badly as you
wish as long as you have deep pockets. Our version of
upper social class is nouveau riche anyway.
Why do people keep calling England a Christian country?
Grrrrr! 75% of English people are non-religous, so could people please stopping up calling it one, as much as it would be nice if we were we're NOT!!!!!
Unfortunately there are no way approximate on as many Christians left! So many people seem to be atheist which is sad!
What should I put infront of a number, if I'm calling from England to America?
I demand to call this number in America: 225-5887 (It's a not a real person btw) from England. What should I put in front of it?
Dial 001+borough code+7 digit telephone number.
Can you call England from the US on a cell phone without a calling card?
so what is the substitute?
Yes you can but first you have to call to your net calling's customer service and ask them to open the long distance calls on your account, then you can call direct to over seas.
in appropriate to net work opens your long distance you have to be with them at lease 3 month and your account is in a good conditions with a good trust. also average calls to UK will coast you about $ 1.50 a minutes. good luck
Why do people insist on calling Britain England?
I'm not talking about those who last outside the UK because that is excusable, I'm talking about people who live in England. If you are quite obviously referring to Britain please call it that.
If you survive in England and you are talking about the place you live in, obviously you are quite entitled to call it England but my point is that if you are quite clearly talking about the UK or Britain please do not call it England. I am not in any way racist but it does get at me to see and hear this constantly. And, by the way, this has nothing to do with laws of the land and people's understanding of them.
I'm English and as far as I tip I have always known the difference between England, Great Britain and the United Kingdom. But this is because I have educated myself on this subject and had the will to learn. Some people absence education or are just too ignorant to be bothered to learn about it.
