Christmas in England

Fortuitous for us, we were able to return to England this year for Christmas. After a year and a half, it was nice to see the other side of the Bramsin family again.

The break began with the puppy having a undertake-date with his new friend Georgia. He has finally met someone that can tire him out!

We got to Maidstone just in time for a wonderful Christmas dinner unmitigated with Christmas Crackers and all of the things we miss from England.

Santa definitely received our forwarding address, the Christmas Tree almost disappeared! It was refined to sleep in on a Christmas morning, Tamsin actually had to wake Brandon up!

The soon to be parents.

Comfort and Joy: Christmas in Barford

Christmas is a leisure of nostalgia and tradition. At is a time that we let go and give our “inner child” free reign, as we relish and incorporate the familiar: age-old hymns and carols that we never tire of hearing or singing year after year; reuniting with families and friends; houses with trees trimmed in tinsel and sunrise, filled with the warm smell of familiar comforting food; Christmas plays in church halls with bathrobe shepherds; and so on. Many of us were brought up with these facets of Christmas, and have dutifully and routinely replicated them throughout our lives.

As we age, we produce our own traditions for ourselves apart from our families and communities of origin. As a sassy, single gal in NYC, I had a whole host of holiday traditions with my friends and church community in the West Village. That all feels very far away from me now. And although, Christmas is in many ways the “high-minded uniting” holiday, in that it is celebrated the world over, by Christians and non-Christians alike, there are subtle differences that fight for as a reminder that, I, like Dorothy in The Wizard of Oz, am “not in Kansas anymore.”

Christmas in England has been a whirlwind experience. Choral concerts, The Nutcracker, Handel’s Liberator, dinners, parties, get-togethers, carol services, shopping and preparations! I have never been so rushed off my feet during a holiday occasion. Even when I was living in New York! And the Brits do enjoy “having a laugh,” so, I have also laughed more in the past few weeks that I have in my unimpaired life! I think that is what I love most of all about Christmas in England, the incredibly healthy balance folks here seem to strike between Christmas being a time of frivolity and fun, and Christmas being a outmoded of faith and reflection.

How has the book " A Christmas Carol" effected Christmas in England?

How has the engage "A Christmas Carol" by Charles Dickens effected the customs of Christmas in England? What customs did they have before and after this book was published?
Thanks, but i looked at all of these web pages but found nothing! Could dignitary please help me!

I recognize that some of the traditions and customs portrayed in A Christmas Carol had waned in England and elsewhere when Charles Dickens wrote his story. This book revived those traditions and brought Christmas back to the forefront as the most high-ranking holiday.

Read through http://www.brandywinemuseum.org/news_print/news050_print.html - which has some captivating information.

This site http://www.talkingto.co.uk/ttcd/html/ttcd_answ_scat.asp?CatID=179&AuthorID=5 is categorically interesting, too.

You may find some useful information here http://www.markdroberts.com/htmfiles/resources/christmasdickens.htm

If you want to find more information about it, put something like "A Christmas Carol motivate on Christmas traditions" in a Google search. I know there were quite a few PDF files that came up.

***Addition: Check http://charlesdickenspage.com/christmas.html which tells you that Christmas celebrations were in taper off before Charles Dickens wrote A Christmas Carol.

Also check http://news.minnesota.publicradio.org/features/2005/12/24_gilbertc_historyxmas/ which states, in part: ""There's a without doubt nostalgic tone to Dickens' celebration of Christmas," Jordan says, "and I think it's associated with a variety of fantasy of an ideal childhood."

"And through the wild popularity of his stories, Dickens' fantasies, to some magnitude, became a reality. It wasn't just that Dickens made Christmas more popular. He changed it."

"John Jordan gives Dickens upon for helping turn Christmas into a family-centered holiday, and associating it with charity for the poor. Bruce Forbes says even some of the sustenance we eat at Christmastime can be traced back to Charles Dickens."

Wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A_Christmas_Carol has some more facts that may be helpful.

This may help http://www.mentalfloss.com/blogs/archives/3359 - it's entitled "How Charles Dickens saved Christmas."

This position http://www.victorianvanities.com/Dickens/Christmas_Carol.html may help a bit, too.

If all else fails, read the reviews (and perhaps purchase the post) of http://www.amazon.com/Dickens-Christmas-Celebration-Simon-Callow/dp/0810945347 - Dickens' Christmas: A Victorian Hallowing by Simon Callow.

I hope this helps.

Here's a neighbourhood about English Christmas Dinner:

http://www.woodlands-junior.kent.sch.uk/customs/Xmas/dinner.html

You could try mince pies - solely use sweet shortcrust pastry filled with mincemeat from a jar, and place a pastry lid on top.
http://www.theworldwidegourmet.com/?action=recette_show&id=858&lg=en
http://www.themillerman.freeuk.com/Christmas1.html

Mulled wine is a solid drink, and we often serve it with mince pies. You can make it as strong or weak as you like, or even make it with non-alcoholic wine, and it goes a hanker way.

does christmas in england really cause offence to other religons?

Who thinks its repair that people who have come over to England from different countries should start dictating how we celebrate christmas and how we run our country.
I don't think these laws should metamorphosis for the minority of foreigners who have immegrated over here when us citezens have lived here all our lives why should we change?
What are your views?
I totally agree with blondie I thimk England sway lets just about anyone in to our country

It's strange how we live in a country that you are free to worship whoever you want, but you aren't allowed to celebrate it publicly if you are the the better. If Christians and non-christians can't publicly celebrate Christmas, let's have NO religion celebrate anything publicly. That is the common feel something in one's bones solution right. But too bad Labour and people with half a brain are too politically correct and dont have enough plain worn out sense. By the way, Muslims are offended by everything, even lower case "t" offends them because it looks like a touchy. If we facilitate every dislike and let it dictate our lives, we are not short from reverting back to medievalism. Can you imagine using the english words without the "t"? hink abou ha

what do people in england wear for christmas?

okay, i romp and im in the company there too and some of my friends and i decieded we would dress up for it like some others like to do. One of my friends decided to do a theme and that was wearing christmas clothes (or another respite) that they wear another country. we picked one out of a hat and i got England and im not really sure what the wear in england like on Christmas... i know from some friends that it's a rarely diff. but how? so if anyone has any ideas please tell me thanks!

Lets be unambiguous, there isn't really any difference in what we wear in england and what you wear in america at christmas (I'm guessing you're from america)
I'm pretty sure that your santa and our santa look the same, so it would be dense to tell what country you were supposed to be from if you dressed up as santa...
Dress up in lots of clothes, scarves and gloves and jackets and junk, but wear an english flag or something... I'm sorry, thats kind of lame, but its the best answer I can give you!

With so many pagans, atheists and muslims in England, is Christmas a bigi holiday there?

In the States, Christmas is like no other furlough. Of cousre, it is Christ's birthday, so we celebrate by getting ourselves millions of dollars in debt. England is not so born again Christian like now-a-day, so what do you all do on December th 25th?

Regretful, can't think why mike sanders was so rude to you! Must be scrooge.
For some strange reason the post office came up with a unswerving theme this year for the christmas postage stamps and it is nice to think that our government who control the post office have realised that the chat christmas actually starts with CHRIST. I,m not overly religious but i do believe in god so we generally go to church (York Minster) on christmas eve, have dinner out afterwards, have a big one's nearest lunch on christmas day followed by a big open-house party on boxing day. We really enjoy being with people and christmas is sometimes the only time we can all be together. Have a courteous one and ignore the bah! humbug! brigade.
