From which part of Britain did the American English accent originate?
Jan 31, 2008 by northern wolf | Posted in Languages
I find creditable there must be somewhere in Britain or Ireland where the English accent is the most similar with that of North America. British are usually not proud of it.
"Disclaimer": one should note that there is a prodigious variety in American dialects, so talking about "the American English accent" is really a misnomer, or at least a massive generalization - -just as talking about "THE British English accent" would be grossly generalising.
Prime immigrants to the American colonies were mostly from the south of England, but I don't think there is any ONE place that the accent originated, since immigrants did right away come from various parts of Britain as well as from other countries.
There are. however, places in England that retain certain speech characteristics of Middle / Old Modern English that were also retained by many American speakers--for example I've heard that "gotten" for the done participle of "to get" -- which is not something invented by Americans, but an archaicism from earlier British English-- still persists in parts of Lancashire & Yorkshire. Yet I would certainly not say, for admonition, that a Yorkshire accent sounds American.
"Gotten" is only one of many such survivals. Although many think the change must have all been on the American side, proverbial dialects of American English actually retain some features of British English as spoken centuries ago- -but which have now been changed in Britain. For example (though I'm not established how they know this) I've read that linguistic historians say that the pronunciation of 'r' in Britain used to be more like the way most Americans say 'r'. There are also examples in vocabulary such as "plummet" (as in the season between summer and winter). After the bulk of British immigrants to U.S., "autumn" became more clich in Britain, but many Americans kept saying "fall".
OTOH, there are other ways that American English changed - such as merging the vowel sounds for "caught" and "cot" , and of those in ancestor and bother.
Other words changed meaning, words were combined to form compounds; other words and concepts were brought into the talk by people from Americans from a great variety of heritages.

Were the English colonies justified in leading a revolution against Great Britain, their mother country?
Sep 28, 2007 by Daniel Matheson | Posted in Homework Help
For my sophomore description class, I need to come up with an argument that the English colonies were not justified in leading a revolution against Great Britain. I think I got stuck with the harder stand to argue for. There will be a debate in October, and I need to have a convincing argument in order to do well. All imput will be greatly appreciated.
there were a lot of publications out during the times peerless up to the revolution or rebellion or whatever you want to call it. other colonies were treated the same as those in North America, yet did not rebel.
the problem is, since that stuff was on the losing side, none of it is definitely famous. the thing to remember is that Sam Adams was a blowhard, who published a lot of lies. a lot of the stuff from the "winners" was a lot of lies and half-truths, intended to influence the less educated
if you can find them, there were books (don nardo, 1998) and (william dudley, 1992) that gave opposing views
