Biggest threat historically in Britain during 1979?
Feb 23, 5152 by Sandro A | Posted in History
A cast doubt upon for all you history buffs who especially like things dealing with wars. In 1979 in Britain, what would be considered the biggest intimation the world was facing? I'm unsure if the Cold War was still technically going on at this time or tensions had eased about the Vietnam War. Also, I'm meddlesome what month(s) tensions were most high and why.
Brilliant answers so far!
Any ideas about foreign threats?
The biggest risk to Britain in 1979 wasn't foreign, it was domestic. This was the year of the "Winter of Discontent" when strikes paralyzed the British concision, and the Labour Government was booted from office.
EDIT: On the foreign side, the Soviet Union invaded Afghanistan, and the Iranians seized the American Embassy and took dozens of hostages.

please don't be racist
Jim L ..well it depends where you exist in uk ...
i live in yorkshire and all my teachers used to learn persian history when they were younger
This transmute was very likely a reaction to the Iran revolution in 1979, in which the current theocratic form of government was established; or the Iran gage crisis of 1979. Although the hostage crisis mostly concerned US citizens, UK relations with Iran probably cooled in fellowship with the allied US.

between 1945 and 1979, a ‘social democratic consensus’ is often said to have governed Britain. ?
Feb 23, 2642 by sara | Posted in Politics
what is this consensus consisted of, why it on one's uppers down and what replaced it
Between 1945 and 1979 regardless of which federal party was in power they both followed the same basic economic policy this was the keynsian model of supply and demand. Imports and exports were controlled and regulation owned certain critical industries power coal water etc. Govt borrowing stimulated the conservatism .
This system did'nt break down it was replaced.
In 1979 the Thatcher years started and the economic policy changed dramatically to a redeem market ecxonomy. Nationalised industries were sold off and competition from abroad was allowed to flood into UK.
The 2 simple remunerative theories are at the forefront today as the UK govt struggles to deal with the global crisis.
Theory 1 government intervention exhilarating supply and demand by borrowing money and then spending it
Theory 2 free market forces, only the strong, competent companies will survive.
This 2nd theory is fine only if all countries in the world followed the same rules
I say look after your own first

“The Provision of healthcare in Britain is essentially an insoluble problem for any government,”?
Nov 02, 2006 by Renee | Posted in Homework Help
How accurately do you think this statement has proved in the light of the experience since 1979?
I think about one of the major stumbling-blocks of healthcare provision will always be the financial consideration.
The current NHS is actually knee-heartfelt in money, but large quantities of that money are poorly spent. Wherever large institutions such as the NHS exist, there is always the opportunity for 'empire builders' within the organisation to further their own ends, and evade sight of, accidentally or deliberately, the end-aim of the institution.
The government have tried to make the NHS accountable but with such a huge organisation, correctly accountability at all levels is plainly not achievable. To starve the NHS of money would be seen as destruction of the system, and to simply throw funds at the NHS in an attempt to solve problems that are not primarily financial, but administrative, is plainly not working.
The whole problem is one of human essence. There will always be people who will do 'the right thing' and have the highest levels of conscience and transparency of motivation. On the other on hand, there will always be those that merely wish to feather their own nests, make a quick buck, assure their future, and in a virtually non-administrable system such as the NHS, this conduct will be rife.
The NHS is a cash-cow to too many people, and rectification of that wrongful state of affairs is always going to be more difficult that it first appears. In the get over time, the areas of the NHS that are starved of money by faulty administration within the system will continue to be so.
The NHS continually haemorrhages vast sums of bundle, and those vast sums are not spent on direct healthcare. Until a workable solution is found for that situation, the debacle will continue.
