Calling all Londoners! I need help! What are some good web sites I can go to for London information?

Okay, here's the inanimate object. I'm in the process of writing my first novel, and part of it will be taking place in London. Since I certainly can't afford to visit your admirable city, I've spent the last several days trying to research it and am having a bit of trouble.
I need information like hotels or bed & breakfasts I could lodge in that are located more in the quiet, outskirts of London, but that have easy access to London and it's sights & attractions via underground stations, etc.
My untried is about an American woman who inherits a home in a quiet town there, and she travels to London with a friend to see the home and investigate the status quo.
If you need anymore details, please let me know, and I'll add them onto my question. The most informative answer or the one with the longest lists of advantageous web sites will get ten points! Thanks!

Where can I find background information on London, England?

I am doing a newspaper quintessence brochure on London for one of my classes. And I want to start off with a small paragraph on background information on London, however, when i type that into the computer and I click on one of the results, it gives me unecessary information. I needfulness information such as when London was founded, what it took to build London, who built it, when was it built, what country or land was there before London? If you have any suggestion I would appreciate it. My project isn't due for days and I could use all the advise I can get.
Oh no!!! I don't want all that information in one paragraph. Those are just some suggestions. Just general things that I would like to put in my essay.

Why the tackle( to be more precise it was a guy at 9:00 to 9:30 PM, Tuesday 27,2008) at the Victoria Coach Station information desk at the Arrivals in London, UK, is so disrespectful and impolite? Can someone please let me, where, and to whom can I make a complain about this African Guy, who looks like doesn't like the job he is doing, and makes all Londoners who are working in the services look bad in the eyes of the tourists?
I find that most people in the British ritual industry are rude all over the country. They act as if they're insulted they have to serve you. Huffing and eye rolling seem to be part of their training. I don't recognize why they don't get a job in a factory away from people if they can't be helpful. I bet there are lots of nice friendly Polish people who could do a more wisely job.
