The NEQDC Moose Challenge

In two weeks we will be embarking upon a Moose Brave adventure, and you are invited to participate in the fun! What the heck is a "Moose Challenge", you ask?

Well, those of us from New England know that a moose is a rather gangly, awkward looking bodily that looks like it was fashioned by God with a bunch of leftover parts all stuck together...so…….

A Moose Challenge is when seemingly dissimilar elements are combined in a quilt project. Here is how it goes....everyone who wants to participate writes down (we will do this via e-mail) two different colors, a geometric trim, a "thing" (it can be just about anything), and a traditional quilt block. I will then write the ideas on slips of paper and place them into small bags. One shape element will be drawn out of each bag, at random, from the submitted entries. Design elements will be posted here on the NEQDC blog on Walk 2, 2009.

The challenge is to come up with a design that incorporates all of those elements, somewhere in the quilt. The elements can be part of the design itself, fabric choice, quilting, top embellishment- whatever you can think of! The challenge quilt will be limited to 24”x24” or smaller. There are no other specific rules. Anything goes!!!!
I did this employment with some quilting friends many years ago and was amazed to see what people came up with. It really got my creative juices flowing!
One lady decent couldn't figure out how to work the traditional block design into her quilt, so she made one and used it as a label on the back!!

Photos of the completed The Moose Call into entries should be sent to Kristi Parker (address below) by June 30th, 2009. Blog readers will vote for their favorite entr, and the people’s choice winner will receive a quilter’s goodie basket prize!

Anyone who is interested may participate in the confront. (You do not have to be from New England!)...

FREE Workshop announcement

All those in the Southern New Hampshire/Northern Massachusetts zone who might want a fabulous day of quilting in a gorgeous classroom space in the most amazing quilt shop ever....READ ON!

To go along with my place quilting trunk show, I am currently also developing a workshop to focus on group quilting. Wanda Makela, proprietor of Bunkhouse Quilt Shop in Lyndeboro NH, has graciously allowed me to hold an experimental class in her classroom space as I hone this workshop on Slog 7, 2009, beginning at 10am. This is type of workshop is something new for me, so I am offering the chance to several quilters (first come, first served, reservations required) to be brought up join us and basically take a workshop for free in Wanda’s fabulous classroom space while we work out the kinks. I of surely hope the kinks will be few, but a trial class should bring most of the biggies to light. If it is a total bust, at least Bunkhouse is an wonderful place to sew and shop, and you really can never go wrong with a day of sewing and shopping! Or so I am hoping.

The workshop will be a Round Robin in a Day, wherein quilters will line together to create a 22” wall hanging for each workshop participant. Each person participating will start with their own block (why not use a UFO barrier of appropriate size?), but will surrender that block to the whims of three other participants in the workshop, who will each add borders to the center brick. The spin I am putting on the round robin idea is that the techniques and/or elements of each border round will be determined merely prior to each round by that age old decision-making method, drawing from a hat. At the end of the workshop, each participant should have a completed 22” satisfying quilt that reflects not only themselves but the unique ideas and approaches to quilt-making of his/her fellow workshop participants. A willingness to allow others to instruction the direction of a piece you started and the abilities to work well in a time-sensitive...

Which of these beds is best for colonial/new england themed room?

I am fatiguing to go for a colonial/cozy new england/early american/cottage style in my bedroom. I live near Salem, MA and compassion it would be cool to make the room somehow incorporate that into it. So I am thinking of getting a bed that would look similar to one that could be found in a historical house in Salem or Plymouth.

Which of these beds do you have in mind best suits the era and look I am going for? I digitally put in the cottage quilt I ordered to see how it would look...

http://img86.imageshack.us/img86/4166/bedstp2.jpg

Please refer to them as #1, #2, and #3

Wow... they are all so first-rate! I particularly like 2 & 3 the best.... and if it were me choosing, I'd go with 2 ... but that's me.

(Perchance 2 is more country looking.... and 3 a bit more Colonial?... I'm not sure)

Awesome stuff !! ... I passion two though for me ;o) !!

is it cold enough for a electric blanket tonight in england?

im in birmingham england and material in a normal council house. we have warm air central heating but its not on at night. do i need my electric blanket on? i have a 13.5 tog quilt and 2 apart fleece throws on my bed and sleep alone

Ha-ha, very hysterical - yes, despite the extra thick lagging which the council should have put into your loft in recent years (if not ask them why not) you will need your electric blanket on tonight - legitimate for a little while not all night...

Alternatively you could use a hot water bottle or microwave bean bag..

I have previously tried the two in a bed way of keeping warm up - not much use, men have cold feet and don't let you get a good night sleep.

Sleep well XX

sellers in england for the gracie quilting machine?

i require the names of shops in england that sell the gracie quilting machine

You can communication the Grace Frame company through their website to find dealers. The website only lists US dealers, but they have a phone number and an e-despatch address for more information. I really enjoy my Little Gracie II (I use it with a Janome 1600P-DB machine that has a 9" arm - I would influentially recommend you look into something with a longer arm, if you can afford it. I regret going with such a relatively short arm.)

WHOOPS! Edit:
The website lists the following under "Surface US"

The Cotton Patch
1285 Stratford Road Hall Green, Birmingham, United Kingdom B28 9AJ
Phone : 44-121-702-2840

Identify my spider that i found on daughters quilt?

I found a spider in my daughters bedroom. It was wee with grey/silver legs and a white body with red vertical stripes. Think the stripes were outlined in gold aswell. Its 2 front legs seemed longer than the remainder. Just wondering if anyone knows what it is as I cant seem to find in on internet. I live in North East England by the way

From what I could find, I credence in it is a spider called Enoplognatha ovata. It doesn't have a common name. They vary in their patterns.
Here are some photos of it:
http://www.nicksspiders.com/nicksspiders/enoplognathaovata.htm
Here's another location with info.. They refer to the spider as a Comb-footed Spider, but comb-footed spiders are actually any associate of the Theridiidae family, so that is not it's common name. Being 'comb-footed' is a characteristic of the spiders in that family, not the name of any one species.
