Have you looked in the shire papers to find some stories of local kids - perhaps one who has done well, or achieved something, and contrast it with someone who went off the rails. If you find the end result (winning a contest, or being jailed for a bad deed, for example), then your story could show how two people got to those points in their lives.
Perhaps they both started off with the same chances, but made different choices.
