What is the borough of Ealing like? Where should I visit to get a feel for it?
I'm thinking of living and working in the borough of Ealing, but I don't identify much about it.
I'm driving down to London next week, armed with an A-Z, but I need a few pointers of places to visit in order to get a stable feeling for the area!
So apart from Ealing Broadway (which I'm guessing is the epicentre of the borough), where else should I see?
I'm going to be teaching, so I'm looking at schools and their townsperson areas, too.
Ealing includes Southall, Hanwell, Perivale, Greenford, Acton and Northolt. The borough is assorted and these places all have different density, greenery, ethnicity, affluence and deprivation.
Does anyone know if the refuse collection is going ahead today in Ealing?
I differentiate we've had the best snow for years but we need to get back to some order the fun is over! The roads look okay around Ealing but if they aren't when will they muster our rubbish next week?
This is only a compressed cooling. It will increase because we are sending billions of tons of Co2 into our air!!! We need to sigh the Kyoto accord NOW!!!!!!!!!!
Recomended bathroom fitters in the Hayes, Ruislip, Ealing Greenford Area or thereabouts?
Can anyone in private recommend a reliable company, person,(qualified) to remove existing old bathroom and do the whole job from ordering, delivering, installing etc in a few day at a fair price. I want a very simple old bathroom made new, but money is tight.
We charged in Ealing had two pieces of work done in the last couple of years, upgrading a downstairs cloackroom/W.C. and guest bedroom en suite. Although neither really does the whole thing of taking total ownership of all the buying the following two companies seem to provide a really righteous overall service.
We use Phoenix Services (Ickenham) to do the work, - email phoenixsvcs@hotmail.com ... I've had a look and they don't have a website, negligible company that has been extremely reliable and helpful, they can give you lots of advice about things you haven't considered if you in them early in your planning. They will certainly do things like hire a mini skip and take your old stuff away as well as installing metal goods, plumbing, tiling, replastering. They have specialists for the different tasks. These guys have been around for years, are courteous and efficient. I've recommended them to friends and one's nearest and not regretted it.
Not sure how they stack up price-wise, we were just happy to find someone we felt was trustworthy and we've stuck with them. Benefit discussing your budget up front maybe.
For supplies we mainly use Bathwise on Northfield Avenue ... good quote on show, tons of brochures and again, their people will sit down patiently and go through what you want to buy.
The nice thing that we have found is that Phoenix and Bathwise can work well together, and orchestrate delivery at sensible times, like when the Phoenix guys are around, even if you are out - they can sort this out between themselves if you let them, so the bath can get delivered at just the at intervals Phoenix need to install it and you don't end up with a bath hanging around in your garden (or bedroom) for a day ...
Phoenix have done the buying of some items for us, but I improvise the choice is more limited as they deal with a small number of suppliers in that way - their prime business is the installation and fitting Though they will physically get the goods if needful, the purchase ends up between you and their supplier (so they don't end up in the middle if you have a hardware guarantee issue for example). This is a good fetish, I think. Phoenix work is guaranteed/warranteed and they are happy to pop back in and help tweak things if something isn't thoroughly right after they have left.
Also helpful as suppliers are:
M B S Manufacturing Ltd
220 Uxbridge Road
Southall, UB1 3DZ
Near the Ironbridge conjoining on Uxbridge Road. They always seem ready to discount from any price they start at ... maybe worth looking at if, as you say, readies is tight. You can get the phone number by lookling up on BT.com
Overall I'd say "start with Phoenix" and take it from there ... they may bring up other suppliers closer to you if you are outside the Ealing/Southall area.
Hope all this helps

The Great Ealing Film Challenge 26: San Demetrio, London (1943) Back in wartime staging mode, this is one of Ealing's best-known war drama-documentary efforts and, if I'm honest, it was a bit of an effort to sit through.
